Concrete Usually Sinks Because the Ground Below It Changes
Concrete is heavy. It needs solid, stable support underneath it.
When the base under a slab gets weak, the concrete has nowhere to go but down. Sometimes it sinks slowly over many years. Other times, a slab can drop after heavy rain, poor drainage, erosion, or repeated freeze-thaw movement.

Common Reasons Concrete Sinks
Poor Soil Compaction
If the soil was not packed down properly before the concrete was poured, it can settle later. As the soil drops, the concrete drops with it.

Rainwater, melting snow, leaking gutters, or poor drainage can wash soil away from under the slab. This can leave hollow spaces that cause the concrete to sink.
Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Water running along the edges of a driveway, sidewalk, patio, or pool deck can slowly remove the soil that supports the concrete.

Driveways, garage floors, warehouse floors, loading areas, and equipment pads can settle when the soil below them cannot support the weight placed on top.
Tree Roots and Organic Material
Roots, old buried debris, or organic material can shift or break down under the slab. When that happens, empty spaces can form below the concrete.

If water does not move away from the concrete, it can collect near or under the slab. That water weakens the base and can lead to sinking, cracking, and uneven surfaces.
Why Sinking Concrete Should Not Be Ignored
A small uneven spot may not seem like a big deal at first.
But concrete problems usually get worse over time. Once a slab starts to sink, water can collect in the low area. That water can wash out more soil, widen cracks, and make the slab move even more.
